Building a nest

There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.

– Jane Austen

I love finding a bird nest. Each is different and each is so carefully made. Some are tiny and made of the finest materials, while others are huge and made of stout branches.
Even better than finding a nest is finding a nest with an adult bird sitting on eggs. And even better than finding a nest with an adult bird sitting on eggs is finding a nest with baby birds in it. I love that!
Lots of people have found at least one nest. But not many have watched a pair of birds building a nest. Some months ago I was at my favourite bird of prey place when I noticed a distant Whistling Kite carrying something. I went to that location the next morning and saw a pair of Whistling Kites adding sticks to their nest.

I stayed in the car (most important so as not to disturb them) and was rewarded with some great photo opportunities. Whistling Kites carry quite large sticks, sometimes in their beak …

… and sometimes with their feet.

They line their nest with fresh green leaves.

And when they are done, they have a fine home for their young.
